The CIBSE Building Performance Awards 2018, an annual event celebrating building performance excellence, was held earlier this week at the Grosvenor House in London. It was the first Redactive-run event of the year and the eighth CIBSE Building Performance Awards managed by our dedicated events team.

Three organisations were double-winners at this year’s ceremony, with Oxford University clinching the coveted Building Performance Champion title and Facilities Management Team of the Year. Both awards were for its ambitious Carbon Reduction Programme which sets out to reduce the university’s direct carbon emissions by 33% by 2020 against a 2005/6 baseline.

Elementa Consulting and BuroHappold Engineering were the evening’s other double winners. Elementa Consulting won the Building Performance Consultancy (up to 100 employees) and International Project of the Year for its engineering design of an ultra-low energy laboratory at Pomona College, California, USA. BuroHappold Engineering triumphed in the Building Performance Consultancy (over 1000 employees) category and won the Energy Efficient Product or Innovation category for its NewMass cooling system.

Approximately 750 guests joined the celebrations on Tuesday evening, which featured comedy from TV and radio regular Mark Watson. Thousands of pounds were raised on the night for the CIBSE Benevolent Fund, set up in 1933 to help CIBSE members, former members and their dependants who are in need, whether through sickness, bereavement or financial hardship.

Redactive Event Manager, Juliette Bond, said ‘We really enjoy working on these awards with CIBSE. The amount of effort and information that goes into preparing the entries makes the awards even more special for the winners. Each year we focus on encouraging more entries and entrants from a diverse range of sectors so that we can grow the event and highlight the importance of building performance’.

CIBSE President, Peter Y Wong, said, ‘The CIBSE Building Performance Awards increasingly stand for ethical, sustainable and environmentally sound business. Those organisations who take their commitment to energy management and healthy buildings seriously should be championed and their examples followed by others. I praise the good work of all of the finalists and winners and encourage
others to follow their lead’.
