The Royal College of Midwives (RCM) magazine Midwives has scooped the top prize at this year’s TUC Trade Union Communications Awards 2016.

Midwives was awarded the highest accolade in the category for ‘Best membership communication – print journal’. This award category is for regular (monthly, bi-monthly or quarterly) printed union publications and particular attention is paid to the quality of the journalism.

The judges, chaired by Jo Stevens MP said of Midwives; “A really arresting design and a high quality, professional look and feel took Midwives to the top position this year.”

“Campaigning and representation are clearly really important to the RCM and they have thought really carefully about how to engage their specific audience. A fantastic combination of union stories, industry updates and members’ own stories. The midwives clearly deliver the goods.”

Midwives editor Emma Godfrey-Edwards says; “I am thrilled that Midwives won the Best Membership Communication Award in the print journal category at the TUC awards last night.

“We were up against some stiff competition from 14 other really excellent trade union publications, so to win is just great. It is good to know that the judges felt we were getting both the content and design right for members. I just hope that the UK’s midwives feel the same!”

Jon Skewes, director for policy, employment relations and communication at the RCM said; “It’s fantastic to see RCM’s magazine receive the recognition it deserves. The editorial team at Midwives work hard to deliver our member magazine and always strike a great balance to engage, inform and campaign.”

“Congratulations to our editor Emma Godfrey-Edwards, deputy editor Rob Dabrowski and news and features writer Hollie Ewers and many thanks to all our members and RCM staff who contribute to the magazine.”
